Get To Know Tanisha:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
Iā€™ve always been curious in the complexities of the human mind and how people cope with challenges. My degree in psychology taught me a lot about this. When I started my therapeutic training and began seeing clients, I was already witnessing how therapy can be a powerful space for exploration and healing. This is why I became a counsellor; I wanted toā€‚be that person who help created a safe and supportive environment for individuals through their journey of healing and growth.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
Therapy is a journey of discovering strengths, breaking unhelpful cycles and implementing meaningful change. It is very gratifying to be part of that journey, and especially to see when someone begins to see themselves with kindness and acceptance. Each session is a different story, every journey is different, and thatā€™s what keeps me engaged and passionate in what I do.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
The first session is about creating a space where they feel safe to be themselves, without fear of judgment. I also want them to know that therapy is their spaceā€”it moves at their pace, and they are always in control of what they choose to share especially in the first session. I hope they walk away with a sense of hopeā€”knowing that whatever theyā€™re going through, they donā€™t have to navigate it alone.
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?
Therapy is a process, and meaningful change takes timeā€”itā€™s not about ā€œfixingā€ you because thereā€™s nothing wrong with you. Itā€™s a space to understand yourself better, build coping tools, and grow at your own pace. You have the right to feel safe, heard, and supported throughout. Seeking help is a step toward self-care, not a sign of weakness.
  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.
I believe therapy should feel like a collaborative, supportive partnership. My approach is non-judgmental, warm, and client-centered. I work alongside my clients to help them understand their emotions, identify patterns, and build tools that work for them. To make therapy truly collaborative, I encourage feedback, check in on what feels helpful, and tailor my approach to each personā€™s unique needs.
  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
One of my biggest learnings is that growth looks different for everyone, and small steps forward are just as meaningful as big breakthroughs. My clients have also shown me the power of self-compassionā€”when they begin to extend kindness to themselves, it creates space for genuine change
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?
I create a warm, non-judgmental space where clients feel safe to express themselves authentically. I adapt my methods to prioritize each clientā€™s unique needs, ensuring a client-centered approach. I welcome feedback and view it as an opportunity for growth, allowing me to continuously refine my practice to best support my clients.
  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
Reading books, cricket, colouring, exercise, music and spending time with family and friends.
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

I take an eclectic approach, which means I combine different therapy styles to fit your needs. This includes:

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): Understanding how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence each other.

DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): Helping with emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

Narrative Therapy: Exploring your personal stories and reshaping unhelpful narratives.

Transactional Analysis: Understanding patterns in relationships and communication.

Mindfulness Practices: Grounding techniques to manage stress and anxiety.

In simple terms, I donā€™t believe in a ā€œone-size-fits-allā€ methodā€”I tailor therapy to what works best for you.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?
I believe therapy should be a space where everyone feels affirmed and respected for who they are. I ensure that my language and approach are inclusive, creating a safe and non-judgmental environment. Clients can share their identities and experiences without fear of judgment, invalidation, or assumptions.
