Get To Know Shreya:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
I have a natural inclination towards connecting with people, hearing their stories, and understanding their unique experiences. As a curious individual, I find joy in learning about others’ perspectives and experiences. I am interested in channeling this curiosity into the therapeutic space. Additionally, I believe that being a counsellor is a learning experience in itself. In my interactions with clients, I have been inspired by their resilience and ability to navigate life’s challenges with grace. I view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership, where both the client and counsellor contribute equally towards the client’s growth and well-being.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
A sense of personal fulfilment and meaning is what drives me to grow as counsellor.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
Providing a sense of safety and comfort is paramount in my counselling approach. I want my clients to feel at ease and assured that they are in a non-judgmental and supportive environment. I also recognize that therapy is a process and can be challenging at times, but is equally healthy. I encourage my clients to actively participate in their own healing journey and to communicate openly with me. I also recognize that therapy is not just a one-hour session but a continuous process that extends beyond our time together.
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?
Therapy is accessible to anyone who feels they may benefit from it, and there is no specific criterion for seeking counselling. It is a personal choice, and individuals should not feel ashamed or hesitant to seek support when needed. It is important to recognize that therapy is not a quick fix but rather a journey towards self-discovery and personal growth. The process of therapy is intended to be deep and introspective, helping clients gain a better understanding of themselves, their emotions, and their patterns of behavior.
  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.
I understand that the relationship between a therapist and client is a professional one, but I also strive to create an open, candid, and safe environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their concerns with me. I recognize that it can be intimidating for clients to share their personal stories with someone they may have just met, but my goal is to establish a trusting relationship over time. I aim to create a warm and welcoming space for clients to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment and ultimately create a fulfilling environment for the clients.
  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
A resilient attitude, embracing the strength in vulnerability and maintaining a sense of hope even during the darkest of times.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?
I empower clients to reach the insights on their own, while I act a catalyst for change. My core strengths as a therapist are active listening, objective empathy, and providing a healthy perspective to help clients navigate their concerns. I prioritize creating a safe and validating space where clients feel heard and understood. When needed, I gently challenge clients without making them feel threatened or judged, to support their growth and progress.
  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy exploring my creative side through dance and other performing arts. I find that these activities also serve as a form of self-care for me. Additionally, I value spending time with my friends and going on drives to clear my mind.
  • What are the areas of concern you address in counselling? Do you work with specific populations?
I specialize in addressing a wide range of everyday mental and emotional concerns, such as anxiety, depression, body image issues, relationship difficulties, self-esteem concerns, family conflicts, anger management, and procrastination. My client base typically includes adolescents and young adults up to their mid-thirties.
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?
My approach involves gaining a comprehensive understanding of each client’s unique context, thought processes, emotions, and behavioral patterns. With this understanding, I create a suitable intervention plan that is designed to address their individual needs.
  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?
I approach all my clients with an open mind and without any preconceptions or biases regarding their gender or sexuality. I strive to continually educate myself about a range of queer identities and experiences, in order to better understand my clients’ perspectives and provide them with the support they need.
