  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
    Growing up, witnessing a loved one struggle without access to adequate mental health support ignited my interest in this field. As I progressed through my junior college years, I discovered a natural inclination towards understanding human behavior and found myself naturally gravitating towards creating informal listening spaces for others. This realization eventually led me to pursue this work full-time.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
    What I find truly exciting about my work as a counsellor is the honour of witnessing someone’s journey in its entirety: from their vulnerability and pain to their growth, strength, and fully empowered selves.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
    Feelings of security, autonomy, and trust are paramount to me. It’s crucial that my clients feel safe and supported in our sessions.
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?
    Trusting a new person with your inner world can be intimidating. Know that these feelings are welcomed and have space to be held in the therapeutic relationship. It might not be possible to find the perfect therapist on the first try. But the secret is not to find the perfect or the best one, but someone who, in their own fallible ways, is open to learning, supporting, and accompanying you on your most intimate journey :)
  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.

    I genuinely believe that every individual possesses the innate capacity to flourish. The purpose of a therapeutic relationship is to serve as a safe container, allowing individuals to transition from a place of feeling stuck to one of nourishment and empowerment. To facilitate this transition, I invite my clients to take the wheel of their own lives. The therapeutic space acts as an engine oil, repairing any wear and tear, and supports them in moving forward with a renewed sense of energy and control.

    In order to make the therapy space more co-creative, I engage in the following practices:

    1. I collaboratively set realistic and achievable goals with my clients. This involves discussing their expectations, desired outcomes, and incorporating their feedback into the goal-setting process.
    2. I initiate regular check-ins to gather feedback on the counseling process. This can involve asking about their comfort level, satisfaction with progress, and any adjustments they may want to make to the therapeutic approach.
    3. I invite clients to exercise their decision-making regarding interventions, techniques, or approaches. The intent behind doing this is to help them feel empowered and invested in the therapeutic process.
    4. In collaboration with clients, I design activities or homework assignments that they can engage in between sessions. This promotes active participation and reinforces the therapeutic work outside of the counseling room.
    5. I provide psychoeducation to clients about therapeutic approaches, techniques, and the rationale behind interventions. This helps them understand the purpose of the work we are doing together.
    6. I am mindful of systemic factors that can affect the client. To practice this lens more sustainably, I engage in self-reflection of my own social identity and how that plays out in the therapy room. I read up on the ever-changing socio-political landscape of the country and attend trainings to cater to the unique background, values, and experiences of my clients.
    7. I believe that the client-counselor relationship plays a critical role in generating positive outcomes in therapy. Therefore, I extend an open invitation to clients to share any concerns they may have about the therapeutic relationship in reviews or otherwise.
  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
    In my counselling experience, the most important insight I’ve gained from my clients is the value of consistently showing up. Even in moments of despair and disillusionment, my clients unfailingly attend sessions with a spark of hope, anticipating that tomorrow holds the potential for improvement. This untethered attitude not only inspires me but also serves as a poignant reminder that optimism can endure, even in the midst of adversity.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?

    As a counselor, I am grateful for the numerous strengths that I get to contribute to my practice. One of these strengths is agency, which manifests in my ability to empower clients to take an active role in their therapeutic journey. I believe in fostering an environment where clients feel a sense of control and ownership over their experiences.

    Transparency is another key strength I cherish. I make it a priority to maintain openness and honesty in my communication with clients. This transparency helps build trust and ensures that the therapeutic process is grounded in mutual understanding.

    Equally important to me is my commitment to growth and learning. I view each counseling experience as an opportunity for personal and professional development. Remaining open to new perspectives, therapeutic modalities, and ongoing education allows me to continually enhance my skills and better serve the diverse needs of my clients. This dedication to growth ensures that my practice evolves in tandem with the ever-changing landscape of counseling and mental health.

  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
    In my free time, I enjoy traveling, spending time with my cats, and exploring interesting cafes and local art.
  • What are the areas of concern you address in counselling? Do you work with specific populations?

    I work with adults aged 18 to 50 who may be:

    • Survivors and perpetrators of abuse
    • From marginalized and LGBTQIA+ communities
    • Experiencing grief
    • Facing mental health concerns (stress, depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc.)
    • Struggling with self-worth, relationships, and workplace difficulties
    • Looking to explore or build a deeper relationship with self.
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

    I embrace an integrative and mind-body approach in my counseling practice, drawing inspiration from various therapeutic modalities. Grounded in humanistic therapies, I prioritize a client-centered perspective that values each individual’s unique experiences and perspectives.

    Incorporating somatic experiencing, I recognize the intricate connection between the mind and body. This approach allows for a more comprehensive exploration of emotions, sensations, and overall well-being, acknowledging the importance of both psychological and physical aspects in the therapeutic process.

    The use of expressive arts adds a creative dimension to my approach, offering clients alternative ways to communicate and process their thoughts and emotions. This creative outlet can enhance self-expression and provide additional avenues for exploration.

    Additionally, I am committed to a social justice framework, recognizing and addressing the broader socio-cultural context that influences individuals’ experiences. This perspective allows me to be attuned to systemic factors, fostering a more inclusive and socially aware therapeutic space.

    By combining these elements, I aim to create a therapeutic environment that is holistic, flexible, and responsive to the diverse needs of each client, fostering a journey of self-discovery, healing, and growth.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?

    In my therapeutic practice, I aim to establish to create a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx by educating myself on diverse LGBTQIA+ experiences, actively being an ally within and outside the therapy room, respecting pronouns and identities, using affirming language, maintaining a non-judgmental attitude, acknowledging intersectionality, and listening to expand my understanding of the community beyond theory.

    I firmly believe in foregrounding my clients’ wisdom in the therapeutic process. Therefore, I consistently seek feedback and encourage my clients to share what would make the space most supportive for them.
