  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?

What began as an additional subject in the 11th standard blossomed into a lifelong passion. Even after a decade in this field, I am still in awe of how much this field continues to teach me about the human mind and personality development.

I chose this profession because I have witnessed firsthand the difference therapy makes—both as a practitioner and as someone who’s sat in the client’s chair. Having experienced therapy myself, I consider it one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

There’s something deeply meaningful about creating a space where people can safely unpack their experiences without judgment. The privilege of witnessing clients’ resilience, vulnerabilities, and growth through major life transitions continues to inspire me.

As Carl Rogers noted, “When I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” Creating environments where this paradoxical truth can unfold remains my motivation in ā€˜becoming’ a therapist.

  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?

What excites me about being a therapist is creating a space where people feel safe enough to be vulnerable, where healing becomes possible through genuine connection. It’s a wholesome journey with all its ups and downs, witnessing someone move from feeling stuck to discovering their own resilience and wisdom.

At the same time, therapy work continually challenges me to learn and discover new techniques that can meet the diverse needs of my clients, because there’s truly ā€˜no one size fits all approach’. I find meaning in this work, not just in what’s accomplished, but in the authentic connection that makes growth possible in the first place.

  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?

In our first session, I want you to feel comfortable just being yourself—no need to worry about “saying the right things.” I’ll bring curiosity and thoughtful questions about your experiences, making it easy to open up at your own pace. Therapy is a process based work and our first session will help us to understand your current concerns.

We’ll explore what’s currently challenging you and how it’s affecting your daily life. By the end of our time together, I hope you’ll feel a sense of possibility about our work and notice the problems that brought you in are already beginning to feel more manageable.

Before you leave, I’ll share and few simple grounding exercises you can practice between sessions—some practical tools to help you stay centered when things get overwhelming. My main hope is that you’ll walk away thinking, ‘I felt heard today,’ and carry with you that first glimmer of positive change already beginning to happen.

  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?

I deeply appreciate the courage you’ve already shown by considering this step. As BrenĆ© Brown says and I quote, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness.”

I understand your potential nervousness about booking that first session or choosing a therapist. Most of us grow up with limited information about what therapy actually involves, making it feel like stepping into an unfamiliar space, and unfamiliarity naturally creates anxiety.

Please know that in our first session, we’ll acknowledge these feelings too. You have every right to move at your own pace, and we’ll practice the flexibility your mind needs to explore different aspects of yourself and your life. We’ll always follow the cues of your nervous system, creating safety as we work together. Therapy is ultimately a collaborative journey, and taking this first step shows you’re ready to begin.

  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.

I aim to create a relationship that’s both authentic and collaborative—one where you feel truly seen. Being someone’s therapist means being trusted with both their remarkable strengths and their deepest vulnerabilities, a privilege I don’t take lightly.

A core value from the Narrative approach I hold close to my heart is that ’the client is the expert of their own life.’ This means you are the captain of your ship, while my role is to help you understand your emotional compass and navigate in directions aligned with your personal values.

In our work together, I will also pay close attention to how your nervous system responds to different issues, and what these reactions might tell us about your experiences outside therapy.

Our work together begins with collaborative goal setting—I take time to understand your specific needs from therapy and help formulate meaningful goals that guide our sessions. This ensures we’re working toward what matters most to you. Before each meeting, I prepare few points for exploration, creating what I think of as a flexible session agenda. When we meet, I’ll check in about whether you’d like to adjust our approach for that session, recognizing that needs can shift between appointments.

The foundation of effective therapy rests on feeling safe, seen, and secure. I will work on cultivating these qualities into our relationship, recognizing that only when you feel genuinely accepted can the most meaningful growth occur.

  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
Over the years, through my work experience, I have come to understand that therapy is a lot about ā€˜being’ than doing. A quote that I hold close to my heart is “To truly listen is to risk being changed forever.” I have learned that offering a calming, attuned presence while deeply listening to clients’ stories creates a profound impact in our therapy work. When someone feels genuinely heard and seen, healing becomes possible.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?

I believe a lot of my strength lies in creating a therapeutic relationship where clients feel deeply accepted and find courage to explore their most vulnerable emotions and fears.

My work centers around curious exploration of clients’ lives, with particular focus on body awareness and underlying emotions during our sessions. I practice and encourage self-compassion to help clients develop a kinder inner voice.

I use metaphors, art and visualization techniques to describe and work with complex emotional states, making feelings more tangible and manageable.

Another important aspect of my approach is using a sociopolitical lens to understand distress. I help clients recognize when their struggles stem from oppressive social systems rather than personal actions. This contextualization and externalization has been really impactful in my work with clients.

  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
I like to read, go for walks, listen to podcasts, watch my favorite shows, write poems, and exercise & meditate in my day-to-day free time. When I have extended breaks, I enjoy traveling, exploring different cuisines, photography, attending yoga retreats, and spending time away from screens to recharge and recover.
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

I draw from my training in several therapeutic modalities including Narrative therapy, MB-CBT, Person-centered therapy, Narrative Exposure therapy and Mindfulness-based approaches.

I use an integrative approach that allows me to borrow techniques from various schools of thought based on what best serves each client’s unique needs and goals.

My work is primarily anchored in relational, self compassion and narrative frameworks. This means we’ll explore your life stories—how you’ve made meaning of your experiences and how these narratives might be influencing your present challenges. Through our therapeutic relationship, we create space to examine these stories, consider alternative perspectives, and develop new narratives that better support your wellbeing. One of the key pillar of my work is cultivating self compassion while navigating various challenges of client’s life.

This integrative approach has been helpful as after some months of working together my clients have reported to have improved clarity on opinions, thoughts and navigation of relationships and unique situations. They see a marked improvement in their overall self & how they approach various hurdles in life.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?

My Queer Affirmative Counselling Practice (QACP) training with MHI has helped me to become more informed, unlearn biases, and recognize my own privileges.

In sessions, I remain mindful of language and questioning normative assumptions. I prioritize naming and validating clients’ experiences of systemic oppression and highlighting how these are normal responses to discriminatory environments. We also acknowledge the daily challenges of navigating a society structured around cis-heteronormativity.

To deepen my understanding, I regularly engage with literature, research, and media created by queer and trans folks. Listening to these voices helps me build a nuanced perspective and recognize internalized shame or guilt that clients might carry.

  • The Quote Shaheen Resonates With

People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, 'Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner'. I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds
