  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
What truly captivated me about this profession is the opportunity to ‘listen deeply to people’s stories.’ Each individual’s journey is unique, and the curiosity to understand their experiences has always been a source of inspiration for me. Our lives are constantly in motion, and navigating the complexities of mental well-being can be challenging. However, I believe everyone deserves a safe space to be heard and supported. Having hands-on experience to witness the transformative power of therapy solidified my passion for this profession. The opportunity to connect with individuals on a deeper level and empower them to navigate life’s challenges and reach their full potential leaves me with hope and satisfaction.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
Witnessing the narrative people rewrite for themselves. Life throws curveballs, and sometimes our stories become filled with struggle/problem stories. What excites me is being a part of the process where people reclaim their narrative. It’s like watching a novel unfold, one session at a time. I see moments of realisation dawn, burdens lifted, and the spark of hope rekindled. It is rewarding to see this change become possible, to see the courage to explore their vulnerabilities, the willingness to confront challenges, and the resilience of the human spirit. Every person possesses these qualities within them, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see them surface and empower change. Noticing what these shifts mean to them is the cherry on top. A person who once felt overwhelmed by anxiety might finally feel a sense of calm. Someone struggling in a relationship might rediscover the joy of connection. These moments, big and small, are testaments to the power of therapy and the profound impact it can have on a person’s life.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
The first session is about laying the groundwork for a successful therapeutic journey. It is an opportunity to embark on a journey of self-discovery together. While building trust takes time, I hope this initial meeting sparks a sense of curiosity and possibility within you. I know reaching out for support can feel overwhelming, but I want you to know that you are not alone on this journey. The fact that you’ve taken the first step to reach out for help is truly inspiring. Our sessions will be a safe space to begin sharing your story at your own pace. We will build a therapeutic alliance where we work together to explore, unlearn and recreate new stories, moving away from dominant problem stories/discourses. You are the expert of your own life, and your experiences are what matters the most. Therapy is a gentle, collaborative process, not a quick fix. Even when things get tough, we’ll keep looking back at how far we’ve come. My goal is for you to leave with a sense of validation, a renewed sense of control, and some initial tools to manage your challenges. We’ll discuss your goals and develop a plan to move forward, fostering a sense of hope and possibility for your journey ahead.
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?
Taking that first step towards therapy is a sign of immense strength. Some days might feel overwhelming by the idea of revisiting difficult emotions, however therapy offers a gentle space to process them. A lot of times people come with the idea that there is something ‘wrong’ with them and they need to fix it however as Michael White emphasises that the ‘problem is the problem, person is not the problem’, therapy doesn’t mean fixing. We’ll work together to understand the experiences and find ways to manage difficult emotions. There will be times when one can revisit painful experiences, but it will be done in a safe and supportive environment. Anyone has the right to ask questions, express concerns, and even offer feedback on the process. I’m always open to hearing your perspective and adjusting our approach to fit your needs. We’ll regularly reflect on your progress, celebrating it and acknowledging challenges along the way.
  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.
I view therapy as a collaborative partnership where we work together towards your goals. Imagine therapy as a road trip. You’re behind the wheel, in control of the pace and direction. I’m your navigator, using a map (my knowledge and experience) to suggest routes and avoid roadblocks. Ultimately, the destination (your goals) is chosen by you, and we work together to get there. Some clients worry that having a map gives me too much control. But remember, the map is just a suggestion. You can choose to take scenic detours, explore new paths, or even change the destination entirely. I can also help you read the map (understand your experiences), identify potential hazards (challenges), and suggest resources (tools and strategies) to keep the journey smooth. It’s your journey, and I’m here to support your decisions.
  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
One of the most profound lessons learned from client interactions is the nonlinear nature of the therapeutic journey. There will be ups and downs, breakthroughs followed by pauses. What truly inspires me is the unwavering consistency and hope that clients bring to the process. They serve as a reminder that despite facing obstacles, there is always a spark of hope that persists. The power of silence : ‘pauses’ in sessions, once uncomfortable for me, now offer a valuable space for clients to process their emotions. I’ve learned to be present and comfortable in that silence, allowing clients to navigate their own emotional landscape. Witnessing the strength and courage clients display as they navigate their journeys towards mental well-being is truly humbling and inspiring.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?
My core strengths involve creating a safe, brave and supportive space for your self-discovery journey. I am dedicated to self-awareness, understanding my own emotions well, constantly evolving to ensure that my presence is filled with empathy. I aim to establish a sincere connection where I can feel your emotions and hold space without any hint of judgement. I tailor each session to meet your unique needs, allowing you to navigate your emotional landscape at your own pace. As we move forward together, I am here to infuse you with hope, unwavering belief in your capacity for growth, and endless possibilities that lie ahead. If another therapist might be a better fit for your specific needs, I am open and honest about that possibility as well. Ultimately, my strengths lie in creating a comfortable space where you feel empowered to share feedback, explore your challenges, and ultimately connect more deeply with your sense of self. This journey towards self-discovery is an intimate dance between you and your own essence, and I am here to walk beside you every step of the way, offering support, guidance, and unwavering encouragement. Your evolution and self-realisation are my greatest passions, and I am here to witness and nurture your transformation with an open heart and boundless dedication.
  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
I like to do some art, play with colours, and listen to some music. I absolutely adore nature -and whenever I get the chance I travel. I like to spend time with animals. I also love to sleep when I get time to myself :D
  • What are the areas of concern you address in counselling? Do you work with specific populations?
I primarily work with individuals between the ages of 18 years to 50 years, I have worked with individuals in old age as well. Individual Therapy: It includes stress management, self-esteem concerns, relationship issues, grief and loss, personal growth and development, life transitions, depression, anxiety, experience of trauma etc. Couple Therapy: Similar ways of behaving around relationships, concerns around marriage, in-laws, power dynamics, past traumas, pre-marriage counselling, gaps in understanding and in communication, recurrent patterns around fights, intimacy concerns, attachment concerns etc. Family Therapy: Concerns around intergenerational trauma, interpersonal as well as intrapersonal conflicts, boundary making, trans-generational concerns etc.
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?
Imagine therapy as a toolbox, and I’m here to help you find the right tools for your unique journey. No single tool works perfectly for everyone, so we’ll draw from a variety of approaches to create a personalised plan for you. Here are some of the “tools” we might consider using: Strength-Based Approach: I believe everyone has inherent strengths and resources. This approach focuses on building on those strengths and empowering you to navigate challenges. It helps to build alternative possibilities. Narrative Therapy: Think of this as rewriting your story. We’ll explore how your experiences have shaped your perspective (meaning making) and work together to create a new narrative, one that empowers you to move forward. Culturally Sensitive Approach: This tool acknowledges the impact of your cultural background on your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Therapy will be tailored to your cultural context, ensuring you feel understood and respected. Trauma Lens: If you’ve experienced trauma, this tool will help you process those experiences in a safe and supportive space. Systemic Lens: This tool considers how your life is impacted by the relationships and systems around you, like family, friends, or work environments. We’ll explore these dynamics and identify ways to navigate them more effectively. This is just a starting point! As we work together, we’ll identify the tools that resonate most with you and create a holistic approach that addresses your specific needs and goals. Open communication is key, so feel free to ask questions and share your preferences throughout the process. Ultimately, the goal is to empower you to take charge of your well-being and build a life that feels fulfilling.
  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?
Your identity is acknowledged, valued and celebrated within this setting. I place a high priority on establishing a secure and supportive environment for individuals who identify as queer and trans* through the use of inclusive language, ongoing education on LGBTQ+ experiences, and a dedication to cultural competence. Within the therapy sessions, there will be a non-judgmental space where you can freely explore your experiences, even if they differ significantly from societal norms. I am dedicated to continually learning about your life, community, and keeping the concept of “charmed circles’’ in mind to provide more affirming and brave space to queer individuals. My approach is centered on affirmation, ensuring that you feel embraced and encouraged throughout your therapeutic journey. I am committed to your well-being, offering resources and referrals to specialists as needed. Let’s work together towards your goals in a brave and affirming environment.
