Get To Know Bhavya:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
As a child, I never imagined I would become a psychologist—I dreamed of being an astronaut! But my curiosity led me to psychology, and the moment I discovered it, I was captivated. The blend of science, human behavior, and personal stories fascinated me. However, it was my own therapy journey that truly solidified my path. Experiencing firsthand the impact of self-awareness and healing made me realize that helping others navigate their own journeys was not just a profession, but my true calling.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
Witnessing an individual’s journey of change and empowerment excites me the most about my work. The journey is definitely not easy, perhaps with a lot of bumps along the road but eventually when the client reaches their destination that they had set out for, the work feels truly satisfying.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
The first session can feel nerve-wracking—it’s completely normal to feel nervous, unsure, or even overwhelmed. My goal is to create a space where clients feel at ease, where they can begin to trust the process at their own pace. I don’t expect them to open up completely right away, but I do hope they leave feeling heard, acknowledged, and a little more comfortable with the idea of therapy. More than anything, I want them to get a sense of what this journey could look like and know that they don’t have to navigate it alone.
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?

One of the most common questions I hear is, “Do I even need therapy?”—often followed by, “My problems aren’t that big.” But if you’ve even had that thought, there’s already something within you that’s seeking support. I encourage people to reflect on that reason, rather than dismiss it.

It’s easy to compare our struggles to others and feel like we shouldn’t be struggling at all. But pain isn’t a competition—what you’re going through matters. At the same time, therapy isn’t about quick fixes or instant solutions. I wish it were that simple! Instead, it’s a journey—one that requires a leap of faith, patience, and self-compassion. It may take time, but the process of understanding yourself and creating change is always worth it.

  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.

Therapy is a two-way process—while our sessions may last an hour, the real work happens in the 6 days and 23 hours in between. That’s why I strive to build a relationship that is collaborative, engaging, and empowering.

I often provide reflective exercises (not the school-type homework!) to help clients deepen their self-awareness and apply what we discuss in their daily lives. My goal is not just to support them in sessions but to equip them with the tools they need to navigate challenges independently over time. Therapy isn’t about dependency—it’s about helping clients step into their own strength, and I see our work together as a partnership in that journey.

  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
Every client comes with their own unique story, and while their resilience is remarkable, what truly inspires me is their determination—the commitment to themselves and their growth. It amazes me how even the smallest spark of hope, like a ray of sunshine breaking through a gray sky, can create a profound shift in someone’s life. Witnessing this has been one of my biggest learnings—reminding me time and again of the incredible strength people hold within them, even in their most challenging moments.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?
One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is creating a space where clients feel truly comfortable to explore themselves. I also have a deep commitment to helping clients peel back the layers of their challenges, uncovering the root causes rather than just addressing surface-level concerns. This approach allows for meaningful, lasting change. I deeply value these strengths, as they have helped me support clients in transformative ways, empowering them to navigate life with greater clarity and confidence.
  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
Apart from my professional space, I am a tarot reader, artist, avid reader and a traveler. I like to experiment with food, paints and cameras along with exploring anything that comes along the way.
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

My approach to therapy is trauma-focused and in-depth, primarily drawing from psychodynamic, relational, and transpersonal frameworks. Simply put, this means I help clients explore patterns and themes in their lives—not just in their present circumstances but also in their conscious, subconscious, and unconscious experiences. This deeper understanding allows clients to see how their internal world (thoughts, emotions, belief systems) and external world (relationships, work, social influences) shape their challenges and overall well-being.

I don’t believe in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. Every person carries a unique narrative shaped by their identity, beliefs, values, and life circumstances. My role is to help clients piece together these different aspects, making sense of how they interact and influence their experiences.

Additionally, I integrate neurodivergent, queer-affirmative, and socio-political perspectives into my work. This ensures that therapy is not only personal and reflective but also mindful of the larger forces that impact a person’s life.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?
Creating a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* clients is an integral part of my practice. I approach therapy through a queer-affirmative and anti-oppressive lens, ensuring that my clients feel seen, validated, and supported in their identities without fear of judgment or the need to explain themselves. I also acknowledge the unique challenges queer and trans* individuals may face—whether related to identity, relationships, mental health, or systemic barriers. My goal is to help clients navigate their experiences with agency and self-compassion while fostering a space for exploration, healing, and growth. I remain committed to continuous learning and unlearning, ensuring that my practice evolves to meet the diverse realities of the queer and trans* communities.
