Get To Know Aasees:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
Growing up around mental health struggles, I found therapy to be life-altering. Therapy changed me for the better in so many ways. I chose to become a counsellor because I wanted to do the same for others. I’ve always wanted to make a difference and therapy provided me with that tool. My aim is to support my clients and create a safe space for them where they feel comfortable to explore themselves and find the strength to transform into their best selves.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
What excites me the most about my work is the opportunity to meet so many different people, being a part of their stories and experiencing positive change in their lives.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
For the first session my hope is that my clients feel comfortable and safe. Not a lot can change after one session but I hope they leave the session feeling just a little lighter.
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?
I feel that there is a lot of hesitancy about taking therapy- it can feel very unknown and overwhelming. That is completely understandable and you’re not alone. However, therapy is a process, the first few sessions can be as easy as having a conversation and getting comfortable in a new space. Rest assured that you will never be pushed to talk about anything that makes you uncomfortable and everything will go at your preferred pace. We will work collaboratively to help you with your concerns. Therapy is your space and you are free to make of it whatever you want!
  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.
I aim to build a collaborative and therapeutic relationship with my clients. I try to make my clients comfortable by doing a ‘Get to know me’ call before our sessions. During our sessions, I am open and honest with my clients, just how they are with me and I hope to build a transparent and trusting relationship between us. Above all, I aim to create a relationship of two equals where I am present to support my clients and not to tell them what to do.
  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
My greatest learning has been that of people’s resilience and their ability to be approach all obstacles with a sense gratitude even after overcoming so much.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?
I believe one of my biggest strengths as a counsellor is my ability to make people feel comfortable and seen. I find that that comes easily to me and it helps me build strong therapeutic relationships with my clients.
  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
I’m a big reader, I try to take some time out for reading everyday. I also love a good Netflix binge. I spend some time at the gym daily as that helps me de-stress. I also love working with animals so I volunteer at an animal farm whenever I get the chance!
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?
I use a mix of therapeutic approaches with all my clients depending on what fits their needs best. Some of them are: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: This involves focusing on thoughts, behaviours and emotions and understanding how they influence each other Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: This approach focuses on emotional regulation, managing intense emotions and building distress tolerance Psychodynamic Therapy: This approach focuses on processing your past experiences and history to understand your present. I also use mindfulness exercises as a way to help cope with anxiety and stress.
  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?
I aim to make my therapeutic practice an affirmative space for everyone. I ensure that I create safe spaces for everyone where my clients feel comfortable being themselves and expressing their identities and experiences. I ensure that my approach and language is inclusive to create a non-judgemental and inclusive space, one where everyone feels accepted.
