Get To Know Aakanksha:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
The support I received from a therapist during my teenage years had a profound impact on my life. It amazed me that someone I barely knew could listen to me without judgment and truly understand my struggles. It made me realize that there was a whole field dedicated to understanding and supporting individuals in their emotional challenges. This realization sparked a calling within me to become a therapist myself, driven by a deep desire to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, studying and honing the skills necessary to create a safe and healing space for individuals seeking guidance and support. Drawing from my own transformative experience, I believe in the power of active listening, empathy, and unconditional acceptance to navigate life’s challenges, discover inner strengths, and facilitate personal growth and healing.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
The prospect of witnessing transformation, building meaningful connections, empowering others, continual learning, making a positive impact, and embracing diversity are all aspects of my work as a counselor that excite me deeply. It’s a privilege to be able to support individuals on their journey towards greater well-being, resilience, and personal growth.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
In the first therapy session, my primary goal is to create a safe and non-judgmental space where clients feel validated and understood. By establishing trust and rapport, clients can freely express themselves without fear of judgment. I emphasize confidentiality and the importance of building trust to help clients feel secure in exploring their concerns. Through active listening, probing questions, and exploration, I aim to help clients gain clarity and insight into their challenges, uncovering underlying patterns and beliefs. By understanding themselves better, clients can identify areas for growth and change. I also strive to establish a collaborative partnership, working together with clients to set goals and objectives that reflect their unique needs. By the end of the session, I want clients to leave with a sense of hope and optimism, knowing that seeking support is a significant step towards positive change. I may introduce initial tools, coping strategies, or self-care techniques to empower clients to implement positive changes outside of therapy sessions. Overall, the first session aims to leave clients feeling heard, understood, and hopeful, equipped with the tools and clarity needed for their path forward.
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?
During the initial call, I emphasize the client’s right to be heard and respected, creating a safe space for open expression without judgment. I highlight therapy as a collaborative process, where client input and active participation are valued. Confidentiality is assured, fostering trust and encouraging clients to share their concerns. I debunk misconceptions about therapy and emphasize its accessibility for personal growth and well-being. I emphasize that therapy is accessible to everyone, not limited to individuals with severe mental health issues, and that seeking support is a proactive step towards personal growth, well-being, and resilience. Seeking help is seen as a sign of strength and self-awareness, and therapy offers valuable insights, tools, and support. Clients are encouraged to ask questions and express concerns, knowing that therapists are there to guide them on their journey.
  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.
In counselling, my aim is to establish a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust, empathy, and collaboration. I create a safe and non-judgmental space where clients can freely express themselves, ensuring confidentiality and respect for their privacy. Through active listening and genuine empathy, I validate clients’ emotions and demonstrate understanding, fostering a sense of connection and support. Counselling is viewed as a collaborative process, where clients are active partners in setting goals and making decisions. I value clients’ expertise about their own lives and provide guidance to facilitate their growth. Recognizing individuality, I tailor the counselling approach to each client’s unique needs, considering their cultural background and preferences. Effective and transparent communication is prioritised, ensuring mutual understanding and shared decision-making. Nurturing strengths and resilience is integral to the process, as I help clients recognize and cultivate their internal resources. Regular reflections on progress and adjustments to interventions are made to meet evolving needs. By incorporating these principles, I create a professional and empowering environment where clients feel supported on their journey of healing and self-discovery.
  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
In my counselling work, one of the most significant learnings I have gained from my clients is the power of resilience and the human capacity for growth. Despite facing immense challenges and adversity, I have witnessed clients demonstrate remarkable strength, courage, and resilience in their journeys towards healing and personal growth. Their stories and experiences have taught me that even in the face of difficult circumstances, individuals have the potential to overcome obstacles, develop coping strategies, and create positive change in their lives. Witnessing their progress and witnessing their transformation has reinforced my belief in the inherent resilience and inner strength that exists within each person. This learning has deepened my commitment to providing support, empowerment, and guidance to clients as they navigate their unique paths of self-discovery and healing.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?

As a counsellor, I value and appreciate several strengths that contribute to my practice. One strength is my ability to empathize with clients, allowing me to deeply understand and connect with their emotions and experiences. For example, when a client shares their struggles with anxiety, I can genuinely relate to their feelings of fear and provide a compassionate space for them to explore their concerns.

Active listening is another strength I possess, enabling me to fully engage with clients and grasp the underlying meaning of their words. Through active listening, I can pick up on subtle cues and emotions, such as when a client hesitates while discussing a certain topic. This allows me to inquire further and help them explore deeper issues.

A non-judgmental attitude is crucial in creating a safe and accepting space for clients. By holding a non-judgmental stance, I create an environment where clients can openly express their thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism. For instance, when a client shares a decision that may go against societal norms, I respond with acceptance and respect, empowering them to embrace their choices.

Cultural sensitivity is another strength I value. By acknowledging and appreciating the diverse backgrounds and experiences of clients, I ensure that counselling is inclusive and respectful. For example, when working with clients from different cultural backgrounds, I take time to understand their cultural norms and values, adapting my approach to align with their needs.

Collaboration is an important aspect of my counselling practice. I actively involve clients in setting goals, exploring insights, and making decisions about their therapeutic journey. By valuing their expertise and input, I empower clients to take an active role in their own growth and development.

Lastly, I continuously engage in professional development and stay updated with the latest research and therapeutic approaches. This commitment to learning allows me to expand my knowledge and skills, enhancing the effectiveness of my counselling practice. Overall, these strengths contribute to creating a supportive, respectful, and empowering therapeutic environment for my clients.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?
Firstly, it’s important to create an inclusive and welcoming environment that respects and affirms their gender identity and sexual orientation. I choose inclusive language, respecting chosen pronouns and names, and avoiding making assumptions about their identity or experiences. It’s also important to understand and be aware of the specific challenges and experiences that queer and trans* folx may face, such as discrimination, stigma, and marginalization. As a therapist, I also learn and educate myself on the issues, through training, reading, and engaging with the queer and trans* community. I use using an intersectional approach that considers the complex intersections of identities and experiences that queer and trans* folx may face, including race, ethnicity, class, ability, and religion. This can involve exploring the impact of systemic oppression on their mental health and well-being, and validating their experiences and emotions. I also provide a collaborative space which empowers queer and trans* community can to be active participants in their own care. This can involve providing them with resources, support, and referrals to community-based organizations or other healthcare providers who specialize in LGBTQ+ healthcare.
