What is a mask?
“Masking is about conforming all the time,” Devon Price.
Masking is a performance that one learns to engage in early on in their life to be socially accepted and save oneself from feeling like a misfit. Remember, when you were a teenager and you just wanted to fit in because when you are different people bully you, do not include you, tease you, call you names?
In complicated words, masking is body’s way of dealing with the overwhelming stress of not belonging and being different from the expectation of an ideal “normal person”. It is our body’s way of gauging how to act to stay safe and not end up in trouble, be abandoned or be harmed. We learn to perform “normalcy” to be able to survive a world that celebrates acting emotionally “stable and stoic” even when the world around you is crumbling.
Masking/ acting/ performing is not morally good or bad. It is a way of responding to a world that constantly demands you to be someone who is more palatable and follows the norms of normalcy.
While it helps us survive, it is exhausting to constantly have to fight for survival and not have spaces to be the true you. Constantly wearing masks like constantly wearing socks, it makes your feet sweaty and icky. It is comforting to wear socks when it is cold but your feet also need time to be aired out, just be bare and breathe.
Relatable?
Do you also feel that you are constantly trying to be someone else? Do you also get exhausted of performing? Do you feel that you are not sure how to “correctly” behave and are afraid of doing the “wrong” thing in different settings?
