Due to the covid19 crisis, the queer community is a lot more vulnerable to various forms of violence and targeted discrimination which consequently adds on to poor mental health. This is very concerning considering the already existing health disparities within the community and now all the more further lack of access to quality healthcare, specifically mental healthcare right now. We recognised the need for just having a space to speak about the ups and downs of mental health during this very unusual period in the presence of and with the help of a queer affirmative counsellor. This has been one of the major reasons as to why we started the group.
May 2020. We had a demand for increasing the frequency after the first meetup itself considering how helpful it was. We are quite excited for this journey!
The support group aims to be a safe space for transformative healing for queer persons to share and support each other, in a space that is confidential and free of judgement.
The sessions run for 2 hours. The first part involves ice breakers and introductions followed by a focus on a specific issue which affects queer persons like coming out, discrimination, familial acceptance etc. The final part of the session is an open floor to discuss any other points which were left out.
