  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?
I don’t think I chose psychology as a subject initially. It was circumstantial and more like it chose me. And, after that I fell in love with the subject, the approach and the effect it has overall on my understanding of self and others.
  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?
Everything! I simply find it immensely fascinating, satisfying and challenging all at the same time to work with complexities of being a human while navigating through life and relationships in general.
  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?
    • Clarification and responses to their initial queries/doubts/questions regarding the therapeutic process.
    • A feeling of a safe, nonjudgemental and collaborative therapeutic space.
    • A complete sense of being heard and seen. (Most important)
  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?
If you are considering trying out psychotherapy but are feeling conflicted then I’d like to tell you that the only way of knowing whether it is the right healing method for you or not, is by trying it out. Give it at least one try and allow me to help you get more clarity on your current concerns. Wishing you strength and lucidity to make the right call for yourself!
  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.
As quoted by Irvin.D.Yalom, “It’s the relationship that heals.” Therefore, I aim to build a therapeutic relationship with my client(s) which is collaborative, inclusive and empowering. I hope to honor the authentic self of my client(s) in a manner that they are able to have compassion, respect and acceptance of their vulnerabilities.
  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?
It has been a beautiful, humbling and insightful experience for me. Each client pushes me to do more, learn more, be more (compassionate, kind and resilient) in my own life and in the lives of others.
  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?
Bringing my authentic self with an openness to learn and to unlearn both, in front of the client is a value that I acknowledge as a strength in my professional life.
  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
Spend time with four legged beings, travel, shop and go for long nature walks.
  • What are the areas of concern you address in counselling? Do you work with specific populations?

I work with adult population (18 to 55 age range) on clinical and non-clinical concerns, both. I have experience in addressing broadly the following concerns in my work with clients:

    1. Trauma (childhood abuse, neglect, violence, difficult attachment bonds, betrayal trauma etc).
    2. Grief/Loss and Transitions.
    3. Psychiatric conditions (Depression, Anxiety, Phobias, Adjustment disorders, Panic disorder, OCD, Sexual dysfunctions, PTSD etc).
    4. Couple dynamics (communication, intimacy, infidelity, relational and sexual dynamics).
    5. Gender and Sexuality concerns.
  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?
I implement an eclectic therapeutic approach with my clients based on their requirements and expectations from therapy. Having said that, my approach is inclined towards my training in trauma informed work and is emotion focused. Broadly speaking, my therapeutic approach draws on psychodynamic, family systems, and existential ideas i.e I place importance on exploring attachment patterns, early childhood experiences, relational dynamics and existential concepts such as meaning and purpose of life. Even though I work with a relational lens, I aim to make therapy solution focused and insight oriented equally.
  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?

Being a queer and trans advocate and ally, some of the things that I attempt to be mindful of are as follows:

    • Asking about their gender identity rather than assuming.
    • Addressing clients with appropriate pronouns and/or name(s).
    • Educating myself through reading, training or researching.
    • Connecting the clients to appropriate support network and groups.
    • Psycho-educating them regarding their legal, medical and social rights pre and post transitioning.
    • Being aware of the Indian cultural and religious context when addressing their experiences esp. if there is a history of trauma.
