Get To Know Purnima:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?

At a very young age, my fascination with human beings and their behaviours became very clear to me. Maybe that’s why along with being a counsellor, I took great interest in performing arts. For me being a counsellor, is my tiny contribution to the world by sharing what I understand best for those who wish to explore this arena. Also, it’s absolutely beautiful and pure to see a human being show up as their most genuine and authentic self.

  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?

That I get to experience what life is through infinite perspectives. It’s an honour to be let into a person’s life and walk with them through their journey. I have learnt so so much from my clients, just by observing them in their lives. So it’s a win-win situation.

  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?

A strong belief. Hope rooted in realism. Anticipation of the excitement you are going to experience in this journey.

  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?

Nothing is wrong with you that you find yourself wanting to seek counselling. Think of it like this- you have landed in a new country. You can’t ignore the fact that you are seeing new things. Some beautiful, some scary. But if there is one thing you know, it is that you will find your best version here, somewhere. Now you can definitely go exploring everything on your own, OR you can hire a tour guide who can take you around and make you familiar with the landscape so you can save time. I’m that guide.

  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.

It’s your car and you are in the driver’s seat. You can keep driving and based on what I know, I’ll just lay out the possible consequences of taking the right or left turn. It will always be your choice for where you want to steer. And the consequences? We’ll figure it out together. Team work but you get full autonomy.

  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?

Those who show up, make a difference. I have repeatedly observed this in so many of my clients and this has actually pushed me to show up for myself.

  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?

In my compassion and vulnerability lie my strength. I don’t believe in showing up differently for sessions and my personal life and this is because I value a good authentic connection. I am happy that I have been able to say no to taking up more clients if it affects the quality of my interactions with my existing clients. There will never be any mechanical conversations between us.

  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?

Watch nature, space, alien documentaries. I love both my cats and you’ll probably see them a lot during sessions. I love chilling with friends, cooking and feeding people. And of course, I love going to the beach.

  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

    To put it simply,

we will learn : -a lot of skills -how to zoom out -what it means to be a human being -to understand language and body better so we can learn how to express better

    • to understand life through a lot of analogies.

What kind of a process will it be?

    • A collaborative one. It’s a team sport.
    • We will hold each other accountable.
    • It will be a tailor-made process for you.

    What will not happen?

    • You will not be forced to do or accept something you don’t want to.
  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?

I have worked with a lot of queer folks over the years, have learnt so much from them and also had the pleasure of seeing them turn into their most beautiful confident selves. Having grown up in different places and cultures, I have had the honour of making the bestest of friends who happen to be queer. What’s a better way to learn about a community than learning from them directly? Oh! and I also follow a lot of absolutely gorgeous queer and trans celebs on Insta and learn so much from their journeys being documented.
