Get To Know Zahra:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?

I chose to become a psychotherapist because my own life has exposed me to different ways of being in the world, different ways people cope, learn, and make meaning. That shaped me into someone observant, empathetic, and deeply curious about what helps some people feel resilient in the face of challenge, while others feel worn down. Over time, that curiosity grew into a desire to explore how people change, grow, and adapt, especially when they feel stuck. I’m drawn to supporting people in ways that don’t rush them toward solutions, but instead offer a steady space to explore what’s true for them.

  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?

What excites me most is watching self-trust begin to form. I love the moments when self-awareness opens doors when someone starts noticing patterns, naming what they feel, and realising they have choices. And I’m especially moved when courage starts taking shape when a client begins acting on what they know about themselves, even in small ways. I work hard to build trust and connection in the room, so clients can show up as they are. I bring curiosity, openness, and authenticity to our work, and I feel honoured to witness the ways people grow into themselves.

  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?

The first session with me might feel like beginning to paint a picture of your life, even if it feels a little messy; that’s completely okay. I want you to leave feeling that this can be a safe space, even if parts of it feel tender. I hope that we begin building trust together, at your pace. There’s no pressure, just space to start sharing your story and what matters to you and hopefully, a small sense that change is possible.

  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?

You can begin without reason that feels big enough. We can simply start with what’s true right now. Therapy isn’t about being fixed; it’s a space to be met with care and curiosity, and to make sense of what you’re carrying. We go at your pace, and you get to choose what you share and when. And if we don’t feel like the right fit, that’s okay too, finding the right therapist matters.

  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.

I keep therapy collaborative by treating you as the expert on your life and your experience. We clarify what you want support with, and we check in along the way on what feels helpful. I will share what I am noticing and invite your perspective, so we can build understanding together rather than me assuming. We work at your pace, and you have a choice in what we explore and how we approach it.

  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?

My greatest learning from clients is that resilience often grows in spaces that feel safe. Growth doesn’t usually look like a dramatic breakthrough; it looks like small repairs, clearer choices, and self-trust forming over time. When the space feels unhurried and non-judgemental, people begin to meet themselves with more honesty and care, and that changes everything.

  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?

I value the way I bring curiosity, care, and authenticity into the therapy space. I’m attentive to how self-awareness builds over time, and I try to support clients in noticing their patterns without judgment. I also appreciate my ability to stay with discomfort to hold what’s hard without rushing to fix it, so courage can form in a way that feels real.

  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?

I spend my free time engaging in art both for fun and as a grounding practice. I enjoy walks where I can observe trees and people, and I love boardgames. I’m usually reading something (I try to balance psychology with non-psychology books), and I’m a big fan of sci‑fi movies and TV shows.

  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

I see therapy as a journey we take together, with me as a co‑traveller. We move at your pace, building a respectful relationship where you feel safe and understood. I draw from narrative therapy, art‑based practices, CBT, and somatic (body‑based) psychology, choosing what fits you best. Sometimes that looks like practical tools, sometimes it’s deeper work with long‑held patterns. Together, we make sense of your thoughts, feelings, patterns, and the contexts shaping you, and we notice the crossroads between what happens and how you respond. From there, new choices become possible, and self‑trust and courage can grow. My work is trauma‑informed (steady, consent‑focused), queer‑affirmative (LGBTQIA+ inclusive), intersectional (attentive to identity and systems) and neurodiversity‑inclusive (flexible and strengths‑based). When helpful, we work with the body to process emotions safely, regulate overwhelm, build resilience, and get to the roots of recurring difficulties.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?

My practice is queer-affirmative. I take minority stress, safety, and belonging seriously. I stay informed through ongoing learning and training , reflective supervision, and by inviting clients to tell me what language, pace, and support feels right for them. I also welcome feedback and repair, so if I miss something, we can address it openly.
