Get To Know Sanchita:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?

I believed my innate qualities as an individual connected me to understand and explore the vastness of human mind, body and behavior in a human being. I didn’t know anything else (academically), apart from being present with a human I am sitting with. Since childhood there has always been an intense internal movement whenever I shared a space with an individual or a group of people in different community setups and the ever-growing curiosity to dive into stories of strangers that selfishly satisfied my soul. Almost after a decade of learning and unlearning, I feel choosing to be a mental health professional is my best decision that I wouldn’t want to trade off with something else.

  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?

Mirroring and the unconscious communication that interestingly takes place in a therapeutic relationship between a client and a therapist across the table or across the screen!

  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?

We can sit together to embrace the gorgeous mess. It will be a slow, bumpy ride and we can work together to reach personal goals in a therapeutic space which welcomes all kinds of emotions, thoughts and feelings.

  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?

You have already taken the first step to help yourself. I believe being authentic in practice builds the therapeutic relationship deeper and thus I like to share to all seeking counseling that it is a slow process that requires commitment of time, money and effort to work towards personal goals. I am not an “expert” and “I don’t know it all” and thus I believe if we aren’t the right fit for each other I highly support exploring therapists through referrals and recommendations that aligns with you. However, we are in this together and we will be working in a collaborative way to navigate this challenging but worth the ride journey.

  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.

A here-and-now relationship where all positive and negative emotions co-exists and is open to have a dialogue for all the ruptures and repair.

  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?

I have healed through the experiences and stories client brings in the session. So in a way, they have unknowingly helped me reflect on myself.

  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?

High regard for working ethically (been in supervisions and self-work throughout), ability to sit with the client with genuine and authentic self, listening and seeing the client as from their experiences that have shaped them rather through a diagnostic lens.

  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?

The art of doing Nothing and flowing with the slow, casually paint and sing and walking in parks and naps!

  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

My approach in therapy is using psychodynamic, client-centered approach that emphasize on dialogue between a client and the therapist. My goal is to collaboratively work with the client towards greater understanding of their personal goals and values. I focus on the emotional distress one experiences in a socio-political-cultural landscape, experiences of the past and how it plays out for them in the present day-to-day functioning of one’s mind, body, and in the interactions with the world around in a humanistic way.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?

By reading QACP resource book from Mariwala health Initiative and attending similar workshops and trainings to stay updated with recent developments and acknowledging the systemic and cultural challenges.
