Get To Know Vandya:

  • Why did you choose to become a counsellor?

I am an individual who believes in supporting someone in their journey towards self awareness and better mental health. I chose to become a counsellor because it gives me the opportunity to learn from another human being at a deeper and more conscious level. There are a lot of unpleasant life experiences one goes through in their life. As a counsellor I feel I get the opportunity to help them have a smooth transition into the different roads of their journey.

  • What excites you about your work as a counsellor?

The very fact that I can help someone have a better and more meaningful future is what keeps me motivated and excited. To see even the slightest change in the client’s life, and to see them discover themselves better is what keeps me going.

  • What do you hope for your clients to experience after their first session with you?

My first session would always focus on giving the client the opportunity to decide for themselves whether I am a good fit for them or not. During the first session, I will provide my clients an opportunity to experience an empathic listener who is willing to answer all your doubts and hesitations about therapy. It is this session that I want my clients to use as a safe space to enter and see for themselves if we are a good fit as a team.

  • What would you wish to tell a client who is thinking about seeking counselling?

I would always tell my clients that counselling is a journey to self exploration. Yes it helps you learn ways of coping with stressors of life and enriches you with applicable strategies of dealing with life. But more so I feel counselling is a client’s right towards self-care. You don’t always choose to come to therapy to “get something fixed”. Sometimes its just your safe space to know yourself better and in that journey you find your solutions by yourself. As a therapist I am just a navigator who is holding the map for you but you are the driver of your car and you lead.

  • Describe the relationship that you would wish to build with your client in counselling.

As a counsellor my focus is always to make therapy a collaborative process. We set goals together, we set rules together and we explore together. As a therapist i will always stand with my clients and guide them not from ahead, not from behind but by walking along with you. I focus on your strengths and reflecting them back to you when you may sometimes not notice them.

  • In your counselling work so far, what has been your greatest learning from your clients?

As a therapist who believes in bringing structure to her sessions, I always end my sessions with a 5-7-minutes feedback time from my clients. I create a safe environment for my clients to be open about sharing with me what works for them, what does not work for them and what they would like to change. I can only grow with your feedback and hence in my efforts to grow I always invite feedback from my clients. I am always open to receiving your feedback and addressing concerns during sessions as well as via mail anytime after your sessions as well.

  • What are some of your strengths as a counsellor that you value and appreciate?

As an empathic and patient listener, I feel one of my strengths as a counsellor is to see strengths in clients and reflect them back. I work from a strengths-based perspective and my training in Solution Focused therapy has taught me to look out for strengths wherever I can. Secondly I feel as a counsellor I create a safe space for my clients to provide me feedback. I am open to receiving and learning from feedback which I see as a very crucial skill for any individual. And finally, I feel one of my strengths is my groundedness which helps me have sessions where clients would never feel any power dynamic arriving in therapy.

  • What are some of the things you like to do in your free time?

Spend time with my family, listen to music, practice yoga and cook.

  • What is the therapeutic approach you use? How would you describe it to someone who wants to consult you for therapy?

As a therapist I use an eclectic approach to therapy. Each client brings with them their subjective experiences and hence I prefer to collaborate a few therapeutic approaches that may suit a client. I use Cognitive Behavior Therapy which focuses on working with a client’s thoughts, emotions and behaviors. I also am trained in using Solution Focused Therapy, which is a strengths based approach that works towards facilitating the client towards solutions. Finally, I use Arts based and Narrative approaches with my clients to change the dominant stories of their lives and creating a better meaning for self and others.

  • How do you make your therapeutic practice a safe and affirmative space for queer and trans* folx?

My therapeutic space is a safe space for everyone seeking therapy without judgement or without any discrimination. I have been trained to work with all genders, and all populations and hence I keep my resources and learnings upto date to make conscious efforts to keep a safe and approachable therapeutic practice for clients. I follow affirmative practices to incorporate everyone’s needs.
